Ashurst was established in Melbourne in 1841 by James Hunter Ross. James Irwin Cromie established Ashurst in the Wau Goldfields around 1935. On 1 March 2012 Blake Dawson merged with Ashurst, evolving from an Australian law firm with a strong presence in the Asia-Pacific to an international firm with a network spanning Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. Ashurst has 25 offices in 15 countries and a number of referral relationships.
