Macfarlanes was founded in London in 1875 by George Watson Neish. He was joined in partnership by John Embleton Macfarlane in 1894. His sons and grandsons continued the tradition of the firm and in 1962 it adopted its current name Macfarlanes. The firm has never merged. It has 86 partners and over 220 solicitors. Over half of the partners trained with the firm.
Macfarlanes is a private equity practice with experience in both fund formation and transactions. Amongst their partners, they have lawyers in every specialist area relevant to private equity including tax structuring and regulatory compliance.
