On 23 February, the Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves MP met with the BVCA and senior private equity and venture capital members to showcase the value of the industry in supporting businesses across the UK. This was a major opportunity to provide success stories of investments within the UK, the scale of the jobs and businesses backed by private capital and outline challenges faced by investors within the UK.

The key message from Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s autumn statement was the government’s commitment to growth backed by what he claimed were 110 new measures for growth – including extending full expensing for corporate taxes, extensions to the EIS/VCT schemes for another decade, and a wide-ranging package on pensions reform.

On Wednesday the Chancellor delivered what he described as an “Autumn Statement for growth” and boasting that he was announcing 110 measures to drive growth. The BVCA welcomed the Chancellor’s wide-ranging package of announcements on pension reform which are the next step in creating the long-term framework we need to drive investment into high growth businesses in the UK. The focus on consolidation and building expertise in DC, DB and LGPS pension schemes will be key to helping unlock capital and boosting investment in unlisted assets.
